The great U12As are in Cup action tonight - KO 19:30 at the SDFL complex at Ballyowen Park. All spectators welcome (adults may be charged an entry fee though kids are free). Best of luck!
Only one game last night (Monday 27th April), with the U11Bs going down 1-0 to Belmont. We hit the crossbar four times, but just didn't get a goal. Meanwhle, Belmont had a penalty, saved by Irial OCasaide - but then slotted home the rebound. A great performance where the opposition used all their 9 lives!
And apologies for the very late cancellation of the U12B game last night - the ref was not available and whilst we tried to get a replacement, it was too late to do so.
Congratulations to U14A team on their brilliant come from behind victory this morning. Beechwood dominated first half proceedings but failed to take advantage of a host of chances to go in level at half time. Collinstown then made them pay 10 mins into the second period when they scored a fine header from a corner. But this team has real spirit, and they showed it once again coming from behind, led by another tireless powerhouse performance from captain Harry McEvoy in midfield and with the outstanding Hugh Torfeldt tormenting their back four from start to finish leading the line superbly, they finally got rewarded when a Collinstown defender handled on the line. Hugh Torfeldt stepped up for the spot kick, which was saved but Hugh dispatched the rebound, to level things up with about 10 mins on the clock. The winner came two minutes from time, when the Collinstown keeper failed to collect a long range free kick from Harry Lynch, and Jake Hickey was on hand to turn in the rebound, to send the Beechwood sideline into raptures. The referee managed to find 6 added minutes, but the final whistle came eventually, and Beechwood were able to celebrate a 6th Cup final win in 6 seasons, a remarkable record. A superb team effort, but additional call outs for Sam Small who was once again outstanding at centre half, and James Barr who had an excellent 2nd half. Congrats to the mgt team of Lars and Joe who have taken this team on a remarkable journey. Commiserations to Collinstown.
The ever-busy U12As had a tough midweek encounter against Rathcoole, in a very physical match with lots of heavy tackles and many free kicks awarded. Two yellow cards were issued when tempers flared on either side. Although Beechwood were the dominant side, with many shots either saved by the Rathcoole goalie or off target, it ended Beechwood 1 Rathcoole 2.
The first game for the U14s in the recently added end of season League Cup tournament saw the 14As continue their fine form and repeat their away victory in the corresponding league fixture of last weekend. Dominant for long periods, it was an own goal that secured the win this time around.
A richly deserved win for the lads in the U14 Blessington Cup Semi-Final against Shamrock Rovers, a game they dominated from start to finish. Playing the first half against a very stiff wind, Beechwood dominated for long periods but still found themselves going in a goal down at half time after failing to clear a speculative long ball; Rovers went ahead against the run of play. Beechwood resumed where they left off in the 2nd period, dominating possession and creating all the chances. With about 15 mins left, Ronan Doyle who worked hard all day ghosted in at the back post after some excellent Beechwood build up play to level things up, and Beechwood really piled on the pressure in pursuit of the winner. A series of corners ratcheted up the heat on Rovers, and when Sean Monahan delivered yet another excellent delivery from a corner, Sam Small was on hand to turn the ball in after a bit of a scramble. 2-1 the final score. Powerhouse performance from Harry McEvoy in midfield, supported by his partner in crime the excellent James Barr, with Hugh Torfeldt leading the line all day and causing all sorts of bother for Rovers strong centre half Nikita. Special call out for Rory Tobin who took on the responsibility of netminder in the absence of our regular keeper Ross. Well done lads, cup final for the 5th year running, can you go on now and make it 5 wins in 5 years !
