Some great football today, with all teams playing. And lots of match reports to cover - so read on ...!
Congratulations to all 31 of our coaches who completed the FAI Kick Start 1 Course on Saturday 17th Jan. The course was a full day 9am to 5pm of theory and practical work. On behalf of the club, parents and players, sincere thanks to those who participated for your continued commitment.
Playing in the Champions League Group C of the amalgamated SDFL and Wicklow & District Schoolboys/girls League, the U12A team had a tight match against Rathnew FC, drawing 1-1 at full time. So the penalty lottery, and we lost 3-1 in the shootout. But well played guys - and on to the next match. Charles
Not a lot to report today, with no competitive football for the teams up to U10 (coaches away on FAI training programme) and frost making the pitches unplayable for the U11 teams. The U12b team made up for this with a 7-0 win away to Wicklow Rovers C, playing on their all-weather pitch in the SDFL/WDSL Championships. From their manager, Nick Eustace, "The lads played some great football in perfect conditions - with four different goal scorers". U12As play tomorrow, all being well. Charles
A great morning's football in the sunshine (even if it was pretty cold!). We had 11 teams of 6 players, two from each age group - divided into two competitions, with everyone playing four or five games. The winner of the green competition was Chelsea (played 5, won 3, drew 2 for 11 points). For the red competition, the clear winner was West Ham - played 4, won 4 for 12 points!
A pulsating final followed. 1 all at full time. Then in extra time, West Ham scored quickly with a great headed goal, but in the closing minutes Chelsea got the equaliser with a fine strike from distance. So to penalties - with 7 to be taken for each side (both teams having a sub by this stage). A hush fell (well, most of the time) ... after five shots each it was 4 all, then West Ham scored and Chelsea missed ... and West Ham got the winner. A great game.
Many congratulations to the West Ham team - and indeed to all the players. And big thanks to all the coaches - and especially to Stephen Masterson for making this happen.
The FAI run specific training days for developer and youth coaches aimed at providing coaching techniques and tips for youth clubs like our own. Beechwood FC have secured an FAI Kick Start programme for the 17th of January to be hosted in Merrion Cricket Club (otherwise the next available Dublin programme is the 22nd of March)
